Building blocks are a popular toy for any kid, but especially little boys.  Being able to make your own creations helps to unlock the imagination as well as showcase that imagination in continually unique ways.  While LEGO is definitely a popular type of building block, there is another type that was classically popular and is gaining popularity once again.  Wooden blocks come in all shapes and sizes, and they are a great sturdy toy that will stand up to your child’s toughness as well as to their imagination.

Here are some of the more popular types of wooden blocks:

Lincoln Logs – Lincoln logs have been around for many, many years, and are a great way for you to get your child interested in wood blocks.  They come in sets of different sizes, and they allow you to build all types of log cabins and other wooden structures.  They are interlocking so you can have a much more sturdy building than other types of wooden blocks allow, but they are also limited because of the interlocking.  If you enjoyed Lincoln Logs as a kid, or if you just want to get your younger child interested in building blocks, then I would definitely recommend buying a set of Lincoln Logs.

Kapla Blocks – Kapla blocks have become pretty popular recently.  They are made out of pine wood, and they are all cut to exact dimensions to allow for maximum sturdiness.  Since they do not interlock and all of the pieces are the same exact size and shape, they do require some creativity, but the types of buildings, other structures and creations that your child will come up with is limitless.  They use the power of gravity as well as the exact measurements to allow you to create awesome wooden masterpieces.

Citiblocs – Citiblocs are constructed the same way that Kapla blocks are, but Citiblocs are a lot less expensive.  They are made out of pine as well, but the pine for Citiblocs is a lot lighter.  While the additional weight of Kapla blocks can be helpful in some structures, it makes another types of structures impossible because of the added weight.  This is why Citiblocs are great.  They are lightweight and can be built high up rather quickly.  The best part is that they are much cheaper, so you can buy a lot more to allow your child to build up extremely elaborate structures.  They are definitely my pick if you’re going to buy your child wooden blocks.  Plus, they are an environmentally friendly toy since they are made from the wood of trees in a self-sustaining reforestation project.

Melissa & Doug – Melissa & Doug create a wide assortment of wooden items, and wooden blocks are no exception.  They have many different sets of blocks that come in primary colors or the standard wood color.  They also include all kinds of shapes for your child to make fun structures.  They work better for younger kids, as you cannot build as elaborate of structures as you could with the other types of wooden blocks mention above.

Wooden blocks inspire creativity, are environmentally friendly, and can unlock the imagination of your child allowing them to build cute little building or enormous structures that push the boundaries of architecture and design.
